Ismael, un anciano profesor jubilado, y su mujer, Otilia, viven en el pueblo de San José desde hace cuatro decenios... Hasta que el ambiente idílico del pueblo se enrarece. Algunas desapariciones extienden el miedo entre los habitantes de San José y parecen preludiar sucesos aún más graves. Una mañana, tras volver de un paseo, Ismael se entera de que unos soldados de no sabe qué ejército se han llevado a sus vecinos. Los ataques continúan y, cuando se desata la violencia, los supervivientes deciden huir antes de que sea tarde. Pero Ismael opta por quedarse en el pueblo devastado. Una decisión que le revelará un destino oscuro e imprevisible.

Ismael, a retired professor, and his wife Otilia have lived in the town of San José for four decades. Then the idyllic atmosphere of the town becomes strange. Some disappearances spread fear among the residents of the town and seem to foretell something worse. One morning when he returns from taking a walk, Ismael finds out that some soldiers from who knows what army have taken some of his neighbors away. When violence breaks out, the survivors decide to flee before it is too late. But Ismael chooses to stay in the devastated town, a decision that will unfold a dark and unforeseeable destiny.
